Natural beauty company nūdus is a premium beauty brand who create Australian Certified Organic (ACO) lipsticks carefully made in small batches in Sydney.
The brand launched in 2012 after founder and artist Diana Saltoun Goltsman wanted to create products that were natural and offered people a better choice.
“In the world of today there are lots of choices when it comes to anything we obtain for others and ourselves. Some of these choices are good and some of them bad or indifferent but people are aware of them. When we make a decision on something we think is good and it’s actually not what it appears to be, this is an unfair choice. This is why I created nūdus.”
“I’ve always had an interest in starting my own beauty brand and like so many others, I thought of cosmetics and skin care as something to make me feel and look good, and to enhance my natural beauty. When I heard about a product being natural or having something good in it, I was automatically attracted to it and wanted to know more about it.
I started to look at the benefits of these naturals and then I was intrigued by the percentage of natural ingredients in different beauty products. The more I researched the more I realised how little of that natural product they contained, if it was even natural at all.”
When Diana set out to create her first organic lipstick, she could never have imagined the challenges that she would face on her journey to building a successful natural beauty brand.
“To imagine the end result was the easiest part. Getting the formula to work using the ingredients I wanted, creating the balance using organic products and making the lipsticks smell nice, last long, be non-drying and feel good was best described as the ‘Never-ending story.
After a year and half of everlasting trials, determination and an attitude of ‘I’m in too deep to turn back’, I was finally proud of something I would share with other people, my friends and family. I was excited about the happiness and healthy option I could bring to others.”
Then there was little thing called certification.
“It was great that I was using organic ingredients but little did I know that not all ingredients were created equally. Some products may claim that they are organic or natural but can be far from either.
In order to get certified (which was my goal from day one) every single ingredient must be traced and audited back to its origin, every process used for extraction carefully assessed to ensure its safety, cleanliness and integrity.
And after almost 10 months I’m very proud to say that we are the very first company in Australia to have the COSMOS Organic certification on our lipsticks, certified by Australian Certified Organic (ACO).”
5 questions with nūdus founder Diana
What are 3 things that define your brand?
Honesty – Being true to delivering high quality natural and organic products that actually work and being open and honest with our customers.
Purity – Delivering the best performing products by only using the best ingredients that are eco, animal and people friendly.
Love – We love what we do and we do it with love for the planet and its people.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I must say I’m really not a morning person; I am trying though because running your own business means I need to do more than the typical work schedule. If I don’t do it then it doesn’t get done. I am in love with what I do and it keeps me going during the longer days, there is always something to be excited about.
I can’t start my day until I have my beautiful cup of organic Moringa tea with lemon!
I’m obsessed with tea I and I don’t mind trying out new healthy flavours. I take my dogs out walking every morning and I love spending time with them, they are just so adorable.
After I take a breather I gather my thoughts and prepare my mind for work.
My iPad comes out and the fun begins. My day consists of conversing with my manufacture, suppliers, PR, answering emails and going about daily tasks to move this new business into where it needs to be, on people’s lips!
If I’m not working then my time is spent with family, loved ones and friends. I’m blessed to have them.
Are there areas that you would like to expand into?
We are mainly focusing on products for the lips this year but at the same time I’m always thinking of new ideas across multiple areas.
I am in the process of creating some new and exciting products to start growing our range, and I go through a lot of testing on myself… thank the universe it’s organic!
This is something I really enjoy and keeps the mice and rabbits back in the fields!
What is your favourite shade?
I love them all but my favourite would have to be 27 kisses. It’s my everyday go-to lipstick. It’s a perfect neutral shade that just connects with me on so many levels.
If ever I’m undecided on what to wear, I put 27 kisses on and the rest usually works itself out!
The world needs more…
The world needs more information on better choices.
I ask that people take more time to look at what really is good for them and the planet and ways that we can get back to nature and the goodness it can provide.
