How the Perfect White Tee Is Made – From Farm to Hanger

Kira Simpson

Sustainable fashion is about investing in well made clothing, that you need and will last for years. It’s also about investing in pieces to compliment your existing wardrobe.

One item I cannot have enough of are white cotton tees. They’re a staple in my wardrobe and go with EVERYTHING. I pair them with my favourite skirts, layer them over dresses, under jumpers and throw them on with jeans. They’re the most versatile item in my wardrobe and worn at least twice a week.

Which is why when I need a new tee, I try and choose one which has been made as sustainably as possible. Especially knowing my humble cotton tee can take at least 2700 litres of water to produce.

"Our long-term vision is to create sustainable change by encouraging people to make eco-conscious choices, to shop locally, sustainably, ethically, less often and invest in better quality."

Farm to hanger

Farm to Hanger is 100% transparent in their manufacturing process of locally grown and produced cotton clothing.

From the fields where the cotton is grown, right to the end hanger, you can trace each step of the creation of your cotton tee. They are committed to no child labour, zero waste, locally sourced raw materials, supporting sustainable farming methods and utilising recycled textiles were it makes sense. They’re also Ethical Clothing Australia certified and committed to becoming a 100% sustainable and zero waste business.

How the perfect white tee is made from Farm….

1. In St George, Queensland, you have farmer Glenn and his family who grow the sustainable cotton.

2. The cotton then moves to Brisbane, Queensland where textile fabricator Meriel and her team make the fabric.

3. Sydney is where Anna-Louise makes every piece of clothing by hand in her studio as the orders come in so no waste.

4. Posties Grant and Mark collect the packages. How many of us know the posties name these days!
