Zera Food Recycler Turns Food Waste Into Fertiliser

Kira Simpson

Whirlpool alongside their innovation incubator, WLabs, have created the Zera Food Recycler, a kitchen compost that can break down a week’s worth of food in just 24 hours.

“The  Zera™  system utilizes oxygen, moisture, heat, a plant-based additive, and an agitator to expedite decomposition of food scraps, reducing its volume by two-thirds within 24 hours.”

Built for convenience to be used in homes where a traditional compost does not fit with lifestyle choices, the Zera system slots neatly into your kitchen and eliminates the need for an extra outdoor compost bin.

“With an estimated 40% of food in the United States wasted every year,  the Zera™  system ensures that food waste can be converted into a homemade fertiliser, as opposed to being disposed into a landfill.”

A crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo is set to go live on January 6, 2017.
