This DIY Sustainable Fashion Brand Is Making Knitting Fun, Sexy And Accessible

Kira Simpson

Imagine being able to make your own jumper, handbag or even shoes, with no sewing experience and no design skills needed.

Wool And The Gang  have created an incredible range of DIY fashion essentials from gorgeous dresses and tops to shoes and homewares – and all you need is a kit.

They offer four levels of kits, from beginner through to advanced and each kit comes complete with everything you need to create your outfit. You can customise the kit to suit your style and choose your own colour, pattern and extra wool to suit your shape.

And if you’re like me, a little challenged in the reading instructions department, they also have a collection of fantastic how to video tutorials to guide you through.

We caught up with founder Jade who shared how she built a built a fashion business on sustainable principles.

"We've combined DIY with sustainable design, to make knitting fun, sexy, fast and accessible for a whole new generation of people."

My Nan taught me to knit when I was 7, and I haven’t stopped knitting since. After studying at Central Saint Martins my best buddy Aurelie Popper and I met the lovely Lisa Sabrier, where we all shared a deep mutual love for building a brand full of love and inspiration.

Knitting is a skill that has and always will have the ability to bring everyone together no matter what age or skill level – I think that’s what made me realise how big the Gang could become.

Sustainably built

I’ve always been very passionate about all things good for the world, there are too many negatives associated with fashion and that’s something that I’d like to see change. The Gang is equally passionate and it’s something that drives us to be bigger and better!

Every day brings about a new challenge and a new sense of excitement. No two days are the same at the Gang and that’s all part of learning the works of a business!

Ethos

We’ve combined DIY with sustainable design, to make knitting fun, sexy, fast and accessible for a whole new generation of people. We produce products that are designed for everyone, young or old, for newbies or intermediate knitters, and collaborate with producers whose values match ours.

(Most rewarding) It’s got to be the journey of seeing a small idea grow and grow into something big and beautiful! Seeing people accomplish and complete their first project is always so rewarding and ultimately seeing people do something that they love.

Innovation

Tina Tape fully embraces Mother Nature and we’re super pleased with how she turned out.

She’s made form Tencel (happy tree fibres), one of the most environmentally-friendly fibres around, that’s made with 100% renewable energy AND uses 80% less water than cotton.

The wood fibres from the eucalyptus trees are converted into pulp, which are then processed into the soft and silky yarn!

The future

We’re very excited for the future at the Gang. Look out for new collection and collaborations coming up very soon! We’re also working closely with our sister company DMC Embroidery – check them out.
