From June 20, Woolworths supermarkets, BWS, Metro and petrol stations will no longer offer single use plastic bags. Instead asking shoppers to bring their own or pay 15c for an apparently more durable and reusable plastic bag. Most of which, this cynic believes, will still end up in landfill.
“Our teams have been working hard behind the scenes to accelerate the rollout of this plan so we can start making a positive impact on the environment as quickly as possible,” Woolworths Group chief executive Brad Banducci
Frankly, it’s not good enough. They are still offering plastic when they should be investing in campaigns to educate people about bringing reusable bags. Bunnings has been doing this successfully for the past ten years, offering cardboard boxes at checkouts and customers accept this the norm. So why can’t supermarkets do the same?
