Aussie Bird Count 2025: Join Australia’s Biggest Birdwatching Event

Kira Simpson

From 20–26 October 2025, Australians everywhere will be stepping outside to take part in the Aussie Bird Count, the country’s biggest citizen science event.

All it takes is 20 minutes in your backyard, balcony, local park, or schoolyard.

Every count contributes to a national snapshot of Australia’s birdlife and helps scientists track how our feathered neighbours are faring.

It’s fun, it’s easy, and there are even prizes to be won.

Keep reading for all the details on how to join in.

Why The Bird Count is Important

Australia is home to some of the most unique and beautiful birds in the world, and they play an important role in the health of our landscapes. Right now, one in six is threatened with extinction, which makes paying attention to them more important than ever.

By taking part in the Bird Count, you’re helping researchers at BirdLife Australia monitor where species are found and how they’re changing over time. That information guides conservation work and helps protect the birds we love for the future.

How to Take Part

Getting involved couldn’t be simpler:

  • Spend 20 minutes in your favourite outdoor spot.
  • Record all the birds you see during that time.
  • Submit your results using the free app or the web form.

You can do one count or many — the more counts, the better.

The app even comes with a built-in bird finder tool, which makes it easier to identify any species you’re unsure about.

Who Can Join

The Bird Count is for everyone. It’s accessible, family-friendly, and a great way to get kids interested in nature.

  • Schools can access free lesson plans and resources to get students outside and learning.
  • Councils can encourage local communities to get involved.
  • Businesses can use the Count as a team-building activity.
  • Community groups can join together to spot and record local birdlife.

Prizes for Counting

Every count submitted goes into the draw to win prizes, thanks to generous sponsors. This year’s prizes include:

  • A professional camera and lens package from OM Digital Solutions
  • Handcrafted ceramics like the Blue Wren Bowl with Kangaroo Apple Flower by Fiona Hiscock
  • Bird-themed apparel and gear from Weekend Birder
  • Art and prints from Eggpicnic
  • Bird recording tech like the Song Meter Micro 2 from Faunatech
