Recently Dave and I decided to break the cycle and invest in some decent, sustainable cookware. That is, ones meant to last the rest of our lives. Turns out, there’s not a lot on offer. The mainstream department stores stock mostly non-stick cookware. Which for any eco-conscious person is not an option.
We started with three stainless steel pans and are now growing the set with some beautiful cast iron pieces. First up, this Solidteknics crepe pan from Biome.
The Solidteknics pans are the world’s first one piece wrought iron pans designed to last a lifetime. They’ve created a range of durable, non-toxic cookware designed as an alternative to traditional non-stick cookware.
“Most non-stick cookware, such as Teflon, is made with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and other harmful toxins and heavy metals that off-gas when heated. These harmful toxins can cause Teflon toxicity in birds leading to major health issues and deaths in certain species. When naturally seasoned, Solidteknics cookware becomes non-stick without resorting to synthetic coatings. Seasoning can be reapplied at home, so the pan will never lose its stick-free cooking.” – Tracey Bailey, founder of Biome
The pans are conductive and can be used on on any heat source including induction, gas, ceramic, halogen, electric, oven and open fire. The cast iron heats evenly making cooking food properly a breeze. For a non-cook like me, that’s a big win.
I love using the crepe pan. I’ve never made crepes before. Turns out it’s all in the pan. I found a recipe on Martha Stewart and fifteen minutes later I had half dozen perfectly cooked crepes.
I seasoned the pan with oil twice before using and that’s it. I’ve used the pan three times since and cooked perfect crepes every time. Cleaning is easy. You just scrape off any food stuck to the base and rinse with water.
With regular maintenance, these pans should last a lifetime.
